Only 2 per cent of the higher education institutions (HEIs) offer work-linked degrees despite high demand, a TeamLease EdTech survey said on Tuesday.
The survey also said that over 85 per cent of students interviewed endorsed work-linked degrees as the future.
However, less than 2 per cent of HEIs currently offer such programmes, which underscores an urgent need for change, it said
Around 80 per cent of students believe that work experience on their CVs will improve their chances of securing high-paying jobs, and 40 per cent of the respondents identify financial independence as a key driver behind their preference for work-linked degrees, the report added.
Moreover, 66 per cent of students valued flexibility in learning schedules, and 56 per cent were drawn to on-the-job mentorship, it added.

Former Sebi chairman U K Sinha on Tuesday said alternative investment funds can play a crucial role in helping the economy meet the challenge of job creation.
The career bureaucrat who served as the Sebi chairman for six years said there are other challenges confronting the economy as well, but singled out jobs as a critical function where AIFs can be of help.
"Going by many of the macro data that we have, there are problems in our economy today, for example on employment generation," Sinha said while addressing a CII event on AIFs here.
"The AIF industry does not exist for itself. It has to serve a larger purpose," said Sinha, who is widely credited to have played an important part in the AIF industry by introducing regulations on the aspect during his tenure as the Sebi chief.
He said the AIF industry, which has invested around Rs 5 lakh crore as of now, reminds him of the mutual fund industry of 2012.

Policy priority should be on restoring the inflation-growth balance, said Shaktikanta Das, former Reserve Bank governor, while voting for a status quo on the short-term lending rate earlier this month.
Das, and three other members of the rate-setting panel -- Monetary Policy Committee -- voted in favour of keeping the repo rate at 6.25 per cent, while the other two members favoured reduction in the rate.
In its December bi-monthly monetary policy, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept repo rate unchanged but cut the cash reserve ratio that banks are required to park with the central bank, as it did a balancing act between inflation management and supporting economic growth.
